GameFlixer is built to be driven with a controller, so the first thing worth doing is pairing one. Almost any modern gamepad works — Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo-style, and generic USB pads — because GameFlixer reads them through the browser's standard Gamepad API. Here's how to get set up on whatever screen you're using.

Option 1 — Pair over Bluetooth

Wireless is the tidiest option for the living room. The exact steps depend on your controller, but the pattern is the same:

  • Put the controller into pairing mode. On an Xbox pad, hold the pair button on the top until the logo flashes quickly. On a PlayStation pad, hold the PS and Share buttons together until the light bar pulses. On Nintendo-style pads, hold the sync button.
  • On your device (TV, phone, tablet, PC, or streaming stick), open Bluetooth settings and choose the controller when it appears.
  • Wait for it to show as connected. That's it — the controller is now a system input device.

Option 2 — Plug in over USB

Wired is the most reliable and has zero latency. Connect the controller with a USB cable and, on most platforms, it's recognized instantly with no pairing step. Wired is a great choice for fast-paced retro games where every frame counts.

How GameFlixer sees your controller

Once your controller is connected at the system level, GameFlixer detects it automatically through the browser Gamepad API — the same standard web technology that powers browser games everywhere. You don't install a driver or a plugin. When you press a button, a small indicator confirms GameFlixer is receiving input.

If the controller is connected to your device but GameFlixer doesn't respond, press any button once. Browsers only reveal a gamepad to a page after it sends its first input — a privacy safeguard, not a bug.

Navigating the interface

Out of the box, the D-pad and left stick move focus between cards, the primary face button selects, and the secondary face button goes back. Shoulder buttons jump between rows and sections, and there's a dedicated button to summon universal search from anywhere.

Remapping your buttons (Pro)

Everyone's muscle memory is different, and every emulated console had its own layout. With Pro, you can fully remap controls:

  • Open Settings → Controllers.
  • Select your connected pad. GameFlixer shows a live map of every button.
  • Choose an action, press the physical button you want assigned to it, and it's bound.
  • Save the layout as a profile. You can keep separate profiles — one for browsing, one per retro system — and GameFlixer switches to the right one automatically.

Troubleshooting

  • Controller connected but nothing happens: press any button once to wake the Gamepad API, then try again.
  • Buttons feel swapped: different manufacturers order buttons differently. Use Pro remapping to set them exactly how you expect.
  • Drops out over Bluetooth: check the battery, reduce distance to the device, or switch to a USB cable for critical sessions.
  • Two controllers for local play: pair both at the system level; GameFlixer assigns player slots in the order they send input.

With a pad in hand, GameFlixer finally feels like what it is — a console, a retro machine, and a media center you lean back and play.
